After the success of last year’s Shakespeare performance, we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to take part in our own production of Macbeth! We will be performing the play at The Pleasance Theatre in Islington, on the 21st October (save the date!). To help us prepare for this we will be studying William Shakespeare and the story of Macbeth in our literacy lessons. We will also be spending a lot of time reading the script and refining our acting skills ready for the final performance.
After half term we will also be looking at stories from other cultures, including ‘Journey to Jo’burg’ by Beverly Naidoo, that will complement our topic on Africa.
These will also tie-in to Black History month, as we write about the life of Nelson Mandela.
We then turn our attention to non-fiction writing, where we will be writing non-chronological reports linked to our science topics.
We will begin the year by revising and extending our number and place value knowledge. We will explore the relationship between addition and subtraction, multiplication and division while using new methods for solving calculations as well as using methods we already know. We will spend time looking at fractions, percentages and decimals, measurement and properties of shapes.
We will be spending the first half of term looking at The Earth and Space. We will be focusing on the orbits of the planets, night and day, phases of the Moon and time zones.
After half term we will be looking at Forces and carrying out a number of investigations to demonstrate these. We will be studying gravity, friction, opposing forces and air and water resistance.
Mrs Sophoclides will be teaching RE this term. We will be focusing on the Qur’an and Islam.
Art & DT
We will be studying and creating our own tribal African masks using papier-mâché as the medium. We will also look at African landscape painting. In the second half of term, we will be looking at and creating our own Ancient Egyptian food and jewellery.
This term we are lucky to have external sports coaches returning to St John’s for some of our PE sessions. With the help of the coaches, we will be developing our netball and hockey skills over this term. In our indoor PE sessions, we will be working on developing core strength and increasing fitness through gymnastics and circuit training.
Mrs Sophoclides will also be teaching French this term. We will be continuing speaking, increasing vocabulary and writing simple sentences.
Homework will be sent home on Fridays and returned the following Wednesday. Please do help your child to learn his/her spellings and times tables too, as this is an important part of their home learning. The children are also expected to read at home every day and complete their reading records.
Please do come and chat to us about any concerns you may have. We are in the playground before and after school or I am more than happy to arrange a time to meet properly.
