Summer Term 2017
Teachers: Ms. Joelle Riley and Ms. Brooke Carr
TA: Joanna Poulson
We can finally see the sun and all is happy in Year 1!
How excited we all are to be learning about what happens on a farm in our Topic for this half term ‘From Farm to fridge.’ It starts with an amazing trip to a real working farm; we can even watch the cows being milked and see all the baby animals. Big smiles all round!
We will then be looking at the ‘Seaside’ as our Topic after half term.
What else will we be doing?. .
This term we are linking literacy with our topics, ‘From Farm to Fridge’ and the ‘Seaside’.
- Poems on a theme – farm animals and senses.
- Humorous poetry using Commotion in the Ocean as a stimulus.
- Information text
- Multiplication and Division
- Addition and Subtraction
- Geometry: Properties of Shapes
- Geometry: Position and Direction
- Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
- We will be looking at Seasonal changes and observing changes across the 4 seasons. Children will be observing weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.
We have already got stuck into our new topic; From Farm to Fridge; as well as the literacy and science links we will be looking at the geographical differences between the city and the countryside and the nutritional value of the foods that are produced on a farm.
Art & DT:
In art we will be using our topic knowledge to create collage pictures of the city and countryside and looking at the work of the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. In DT we will be looking at cooking and following instructions in recipes.
We will be discussing types of loss and how this may make us feel. Looking at ways to express our feelings, being able to identify them and being sensitive to other people’s feelings will be a focus.
We will be learning about different birth and childhood religious initiations including baptism and Bar Mitzvahs.
The children will be looking at coding after the half term.
P.E. will be on Monday and Thursday. Children need a P.E. kit on these days (school approved)
Please bring your child’s book bag and reading books every day and fill in their reading record accordingly.
Every Friday we will continue to give out Numeracy, Literacy and some ‘Topic-based’ homework, to be returned the following Wednesday. Please take note that your child may interpret the home learning in whichever way he/she desires. We are not prescribing that drawing and writing are the only ways of consolidating the weeks learning. (Consider making, mark making, verbal, photos, cooking)
On Wednesday afternoons I will continue to be out of class for PPA time, Ms Carr will be teaching RE to the class at this time each week.
The children in Year 1 have been so enthusiastic and keen to learn and we are looking forward to more learning again in the term ahead!
Kind regards Ms Joe Riley
