26 Jan Y6 Science- What is REFRACTION?

Have you ever wondered why your straw looks like it has bent or snapped when you look at it through the side of a glass? Year Six have been investigating what refraction is.

We wanted to discover how light bends when it travels from the air through a transparent material (glass, plastic or water). To test our theory about refraction’s optical illusion effects, we began by drawing an arrow on a piece of paper.

We then held that arrow behind a glass of water and observed the results.

We recorded our predictions and observations.

Do you know what happened? The arrow pointed in the opposite direction!

Have a go yourself!
